GENERAL INFORMATION
The Sussex Mail ART show will be on display at the Sussex Artists’ Co-op Gallery February – March 2012. We will also post as many of the works as we can at sussexmailart.blogspot.com. If you are submitting art work it may be used on promotional materials for the Sussex Mail Art Project. Make sure to take a photo of it before sending it in, as we will not be sending these back. All submissions will become part of the Sussex Artists’ Co-op Gallery’s permanent collection.
Deadline: We will be accepting art post-marked up until December 31st 2011. You may send more than one Art work if you wish. The gallery will be having an exhibition of all the mail art in 2012, all participants are invited to our opening reception Saturday February 4th.
Please write your full name, email and any other contact info you want on the back of the artwork. All of the art work we receive for the SMArt Project will be collected into a catalogue which will be available at the opening reception.

For “A Night in the Lonesome October”

The Sussex Artists’ Co-op is looking for Art & Writing for ‘A Night in the Lonesome October’ which will be on display at the SAC gallery for the Month of October 2010. We are looking for work in all styles and in all media relating to our theme. ‘A Night in the Lonesome October’ is meant to be a starting point, something to inspire but not constrain. Think about a fall evening, crisp air, the year winding down for winter, the leaves are turning or have already fallen. Anything Night-time or fall related, we are open to any interpretation of our theme.

This should be a fun event, we will have readings at our opening reception and pumpkin treats will be served. (As always, all are welcome so tell your friends!) Fall is my favourite time of year, maybe too many years in school has made me associate crispy air and burning leaves with the feeling that something big is about to happen.

A two-part festival in honour of honeybees - Bees In This Place - will be held at the Artists Co-op, 12 Maple Street in Sussex on June 4th and 5th.
It will begin on Friday evening in the Art Gallery, and Jitters Café, 7 to 9 p.m. with readings by Members of the Sussex Writers’ and Illustrators’ Guild (SWIG) who will read from work inspired by bees.
Following on the heels of the readings, the new art show of the Sussex Artists’ Co-Op (SAC) and guests, will be officially opened. The paintings and crafts will all relate to bees. Apicultural door prizes, and of course refreshments, will be available. Liam Keith-Jacque will be providing music.
Saturday will see an extravaganza on the parking lot just to the west of the Gallery, between 2 and 5 p.m. Sussex Literary Initiatives and Cultural Events (SLICE) is putting on a fete, a celebration of bees and beekeepers, including an observation hive so you can see what happens in a beehive, bee-friendly plants for sale from Corn Hill Nursery, live music, a dance number by high school students, hives and their components constructed by high school students, a felting demonstration (bees of course) face painting and other children’s activities. Elaine Hogg will read from her new History of Sussex - a section about a house called "The Beehive." It promises to be a bee-utiful afternoon. If the weather is uncooperative, it will move into the gallery. However, if the sun shines, tables, umbrellas, and chairs will be provided outside for shady seating. Again, refreshments will be plentiful.

May 1st: Lenny Reviczky will offer a workshop on encaustic painting. Encaustic painting is done with beeswax and paintings in this medium will be particularly appropriate for the June show. This will be limited to 12 students. More on costs of materials later, but Lenny suggests bringing small canvas boards or wood with gesso, not canvasses, to paint on. Stiff bristle brushes and palette knives are the tools of the trade. For more information, call Lenny at 756-2317 or e-mail him at reviczky@nb.sympatico.ca

Tim is planning a workshop about saving art work to DVDs and blogging. He would like to make this workshop free with a nominal fee for the Co-Op. If you would be intrigued by this session, could you let Tim know at tclayton@nbnet.nb.ca, so he can get an idea of how many might be interested. Time to be announced.

Lisa plans to offer an all-day felting workshop in July. Both wet felting and needle felting will be demonstrated. More on this later.

Impasto Acrylic Painting Workshop with Alexandra Flood

Impasto is Italian for "Thick". Some examples of thick textured painters: Monet, Picasso, Wilhelm de Kooning, Jean Paul Riopelle, Vincent Van Gogh. Local painters who paint with an impasto style: Kathy Hooper, Gerry Collins, Stephen May, the Late Phillip Iverson. Impasto can take a long time to dry in traditional oil mediums, but acrylic impasto paintings only take a few hours to be completely dry.
Students will base out their painting with the standard acrylic matte medium smooth "oil tempera" technique, and will then learn to apply paint thickened with marble dust to their composition. This thickened paint looks similar to butter cream icing and is super fun to work with. various tools beyond brushes will be used to extend the range of effects possible in this incredibly diverse area of acrylic painting.
For beginners or people with intermediate painting experience

Date: Sunday April 25th 11:00am - 4:00pm (with Break for Lunch)
Cost: approx. $30 this will include supplies for the class.

The SAC hosted a workshop on Acrylic Glazing Techniques taught by Alexandra Flood. Students practiced 'wet on wet' and 'traditional Glazing' with their own still-life compositions.

A Review of ‘By the River’ - an exhibit of paintings by Jean-Frances

‘By the River”, an exhibit of acrylic paintings by Jean-Frances presently on display at Gallery 360 in Bathurst, is a home-town extension of a solo exhibit by the same title hosted recently by the Saint John Arts Centre in Saint John, NB. Seventeen of the original twenty works are on display and capture special environments along New Brunswick’s rivers, including the Miramichi and Saint John Rivers as well as views over the bay in Bathurst.

The main works comprise a series of river landscapes on small canvas board that were referred to as “all little gems” by Alice Whitney, a Sussex-area artist and past-President of the Sussex Artists’ Co-op. I agree totally with her assessment. Jean has the capacity to distill from the landscape, the essential colours and forms and present them with her characteristic ease of brushwork. The ‘looseness’ of presentation invites the viewers to either fill in details from their own memories or just bask in the mood created. This ‘looseness’ should not be mistaken for lack of carefulness as there is a strong sense of composition and balance in each piece. Although it is hard to pick favourites as each has its own special offering, “Scovil Spring” and “Jemseg Sunset” are two that particularly speak to me. The simplicity and economy of brushstrokes works well even with a more structured subject matter as in her painting “176 Wellington Street” and gives that work a freshness that suits the depiction of a recent snowfall in a neighbourhood clogged with houses and hydro lines.

Jean-Frances’ skies are also significant to the mood that is created in her landscapes. The commonly overcast skies have an interest in themselves but the subtleness of greys and the relaxed strokes allow the eye to focus on the range of colour and form in the land below. The few larger works in the exhibit show a range in Jean’s style and the intensely coloured skies in these works contrast effectively with the snow and the more detailed and structured subject matter. The expansive twilight sky in “Moon Rising, Bathurst” creates a profound mood, with the night-time profile of this small city carefully sandwiched between the intense indigo blue of the sky and the grey-white of the snow-covered bay. These larger works have their own significant merits, but for me, their function in viewing the exhibit as a whole was to give a visual break between my focus on the many “little gems”.
